News: A large number of recently-created and apparently fraudulent forum accounts have been culled. None had made any postings, and all were consistent with spamming, adult services and scams/phishing. We have toughened the sign-up process, and there have been no significant further problems. This affected only the forum; no groups or members on Diary 4 itself were involved.

Until now, we had advised users experiencing slight layout issues (especially with the month overview) when using Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 to select the option to run in "compatibility view". We have now hard-coded this into the pages that are displayed, so Internet Explorer 8 users should now automatically see Diary 4 as intended.

The maximum length of the text able to be associated with a day note has been extended. It was previously 256 characters, but is now 2048. This has also required a slight change to the month overview: a day note with text length of more than 256 characters will display only the first 256 characters but add a "more..." link to view the entirety.

There have been a few teething issues with the transition to the new server, but we're keeping a close eye on things and are working alongside our service providers as necessary. At some point there may be some scheduled downtime, but we will communicate that further as and when - it's by no means certain at the present time!

Over the last three weeks we had become aware of a few performance and reliability issues affecting Diary 4 and other related websites. These were isolated to being a problem with the server on which they were hosted. Consequently, the sites have been moved to a new and much improved server, and so far everything seems to be working well. We will of course continue to monitor the situation closely, and apologise for any temporary inconvenience caused by either the original problems or the move itself.

The Member login link has been moved to the top of the group home page. This reflects the increasing use of the system by groups publishing significant numbers of events on their home page, meaning that the previous position at the bottom of the list impacted usability. The link is still very discreet, so does not negatively impact the appearance of the group home page.

See this forum post and the chapter Creating and editing events in the user guide for more information on publishing events to your group's home page.

Twelve more options have been added to the palette available when selecting a colour-coding for a group member. This enables a different colour to be used for each member even when you have the maximum number of twenty in a group.

This problem reared its head again recently, but has again today been resolved.

A few fixes and enhancements have been rolled out today:

  • There is now a mechanism for 'read-only' members, please contact us for details if interested
  • The month overview is now able to be printed without all the extra user-interface clobber
  • The log-on window should now behave itself more politely with mobile browsers

Needless to say, these changes have been thoroughly tested and do not appear to impact on general use in any way; please let us know if your experience is at all to the contrary!

A fairly rare bug has been fixed in the default month view. The system was not taking into account the group's timezone when determining the month to display by default. Since the system inherently operates at GMT+1, this meant that in the UK say (which is at GMT) during the very last hour of any given month, the next month would erroneously be displayed. Not too much of a problem in the UK perhaps, but the further a group is based from the Greenwich meridian, the more likely it is that its members might be adversely affected.
